We've been studying and identifying the different instruments in the orchestra by name and then classifying them by family (Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion). When possible, the students get to play these instruments.
We felt the vibration coming out of the bell of the trombone. This was another reminder that you must have vibration in order to make sound.
The floor tom drum and tubebells belong to the percussion family because they must be struck in order to make a vibration, which will produce a sound.
One of our parents came in and played the flute and piccolo. The students covered their ears when they heard the very high pitches that the piccolo could play. This supported the theory that smaller instruments make higher pitches, while bigger ones make lower pitches.
One of our speech therapists, Kim, came into class and played her cello and let the students get a turn to play. This was an example of a bigger instrument that made a lower sound.
I will be posting pictures and audio files here so you can see and hear what we are doing in the music room. First up is the"Gillen Brewer School Song" that I wrote and recorded right here in the music room in 2006 to celebrate the opening of our new building. You can hear the staff and students from that year singing along. |
